Kurt Gutenbrunner, the chef and owner of Wallsé in the West Village, has crossed the river to open a Viennese-style bistro in Harrison, N.J., a suburb of Newark. He’s partnering with David Barry, who also invested in the Standard East Village in Manhattan and the Chiltern Firehouse in London.
The Michelin-starred Austrian chef behind Manhattan’s beloved Wallsé has switched things up. Though Kurt Gutenbrunner’s latest eatery is still Austrian (cook what you know, after all!), it’s in the town of Harrison, New Jersey and it’s far more casual. There’s still schnitzel on the menu, but it’s a kaffeeklatsch-friendly kaffeehaus—no reservation required. Inside, the cheerful, color-splashed space is filled with Austrian paraphernalia, so dress on theme. We’re loving the Vienna-based Petar Petrov, especially this asymmetrical striped top and slick double-breasted coat. The jeans by Helmut Lang (whose namesake is Austrian, of course) will go well with a Normalzeit watch—designed after Vienna’s cube-shaped public clocks.
If you’re looking for central-European flair, you’ll find it at Charley, a new Viennese-inspired Harrison spot, with Chef Kurt Gutenbrunner at the helm.

Specifically, the concept of the historic Viennese café intrigued me, as reinterpreted through the lens of today’s healthier and more casual world,” hospitality investor David Barry, who’s also behind the development of the Harrison Urby Apartments building, told us.
